Exploring Margins with Xuecong Lin
Xuecong Lin is a photographer currently based in Shenzhen, China. Her ongoing series, Margin, captures the rapidly changing landscape of China's coastal communities. Informed by her own sense of loss, shifting identity, and elusive memory, these photographs are both curious and melancholic. We've released four limited edition prints, available today.
I was born and grew up in a southern coastal city of China, witnessing development and transformation, and well as increasing contradictions.
I've tried to use the most direct approach to taking photos along the southeastern coastline. What I saw was completely different from my childhood memories, as a result of construction projects. All things had lost their identity, which made me feel the change here was so fast, encompassing not only the environment, but also the customs, beliefs, and families. At that time a sense of strangeness and sadness was raised in my mind. All I can do now is slowly pick up these memories.
